Hold Your Price: The Sales Conversation That Protects Your Value Without Losing the Deal

Part 3 of the Stop Managing Chaos sales and closing series.
In Part 1, we addressed why you should stop chasing the close.
In Part 2, we covered what to do when the deal goes quiet.
Now, let’s talk about pricing.
A prospect says:
- “That’s more than I expected.”
- “Can you lower the price?”
- “Your competitor is cheaper.”
- “Can you include that in the package?”
You feel the flinch.
Then you start explaining.
Then you start discounting.
Stop.
Price resistance is not automatically rejection. It is information. Your job is to read it well, respond clearly, and protect the agreement required for strong results.
PRICE RESISTANCE IS INFORMATION
Use Observe, Don’t Absorb.
Do not make the objection mean you failed. Observe the words. Notice the tone. Identify the real concern.
The prospect may need clarity. They may have a budget issue. They may be comparing unequal offers. They may need internal approval. An entrepreneur may also be unsure how to measure the return.
Stay present.
Stay curious.
Do not let someone else’s uncertainty become your lack of confidence.
APPLY THE PROP METHOD™ TO A PRICING OBJECTION
The PrOp Method™ moves you from Problems → Opportunities → Solutions.
PROBLEM
Define what is actually happening.
Ask:
“When you say the investment is higher than expected, what were you expecting to invest?”
Do not label the prospect as cheap. Do not rush into a discount. Clarify the issue first.
OPPORTUNITY
Use the objection to gather better information.
Ask:
“Is the concern about the number itself, or about feeling confident that the investment will produce the outcome we discussed?”
This separates affordability from uncertainty.
That distinction matters. A discount does not solve a trust problem.
SOLUTION
Offer a clear, aligned path.
If the prospect needs more clarity, reconnect the investment to the outcome.
If they need a smaller commitment, adjust the scope.
If they cannot afford the engagement, be honest about what can and cannot be delivered within that budget.
That is strategic sales leadership. It protects the client and the entrepreneur delivering the work.
USE THE RULES OF ENGAGEMENT
The Rules of Engagement give you structure:
- Pause with a Purpose
- Step into Logic
- Speak the Truth
1. PAUSE WITH A PURPOSE
Do not answer too fast.
Use:
“Thank you for being direct. Let’s look at what is driving that concern so we can determine the right next step.”
A pause shows leadership. It gives you space to respond from facts instead of fear.
2. STEP INTO LOGIC
Separate facts from story.
Ask:
“What were you expecting the investment to be based on?”
Ask:
“What result would make this investment worthwhile for you?”
Ask:
“What are you comparing this scope to?”
These questions create clarity fast.

3. SPEAK THE TRUTH
Be direct.
Do not apologize for your price. Do not over-explain.
Say:
“The investment reflects the level of strategy, support, and implementation required to reach the outcome we discussed.”
Say:
“I can reduce the scope, but I cannot provide the same level of support for less and honestly expect the same result.”
Truth creates trust.
HOLD YOUR PRICE WITHOUT LOSING THE DEAL
Holding your price does not mean refusing every adjustment.
It means refusing to give away value without changing the agreement.
Use choices, not concessions.
Say:
“We can move forward with the full scope at the proposed investment, or we can reduce the scope and create a smaller starting engagement. Which option better fits your current priorities?”
Say:
“If we adjust the investment, we will also adjust the scope so the agreement remains realistic and sustainable.”
Do not offer the same work for a lower price.
ADDRESS “THAT’S MORE THAN I EXPECTED”
This statement needs a question, not a defense.
Respond:
“What were you expecting to invest?”
Then wait.
If they are comparing competitors, compare scope, support, and outcomes.
If they are unsure about the return, ask:
“What result would make this investment worthwhile for you over the next 90 days?”
Keep the conversation connected to value, not hours.
STOP SCOPE CREEP BEFORE IT STARTS
Scope creep is discounting in disguise.
Address it early.
Say:
“That is a valuable addition. It is outside the current scope, so we can add it for [updated investment], or we can keep the current investment and prioritize the original deliverables.”
Clear boundaries protect delivery, trust, and margin.

PRACTICE HIGH DESERVABILITY
Holding your price requires High Deservability.
Receive the value of the work you provide.
Do not act like you must earn payment through over-delivery, self-sacrifice, or constant availability.
Lead from value.
ASK YOUR FUTURE SUCCESSFUL SELF
Before you negotiate, ask:
“What would my Future Successful Self do in this conversation?”
Your Future Successful Self would pause, ask better questions, protect the scope, and make a clear recommendation.
Use this script:
“Based on the outcome you want, this is the investment and scope I recommend. If that does not fit your current budget, we can discuss a smaller starting point. I do not recommend reducing the support while keeping the same expectations.”
That is leadership.
ACTION CHECKLIST
Use this before your next pricing conversation:

- Define the real objection.
- Ask what they expected to invest.
- Clarify the outcome they want.
- Compare scope, not just price.
- Offer choices, not concessions.
- Trade price changes for scope changes.
- Protect your boundaries.
- Hold your value.
